google glassesAn Italian eyewear luxury brand, Luxottica, announced their future partnership with Intel to create fashionable smart eyewear. Luxottica own many well known brands such like Ray-Ban, Oakley and Persol; the company also collaborates with Chanel, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Miu Miu, Tory Burch, and Stella McCartney. Intel and Luxottica plan to develop smart technology for eyewear designed and perceived to be worn in the future. The first smart technological eyewear is expected to be on the market in 2015. With such increased amount of collaborations between many diversified companies, the question off intellectual property rights arises.

Artist stated the potential drawbacks of partnering with technology companies as they can replicate the designs and sell the products at a lower price. Intel currently markets Basis smart watch to consumers directly and began selling a smart bracelet also known as MICA (My Intelligent Communication Assistant). Despite Intel’s move into the consumer market, Luxottica believes the partnership would not be threatening to its market because Intel does not plan sell the product to end consumers.

Because Google has received numerous complaints from consumers saying that the glasses looked “too nerdy” to wear during work or casual days, it is working towards developing a more fashionable smart eyewear product. Google has decided to partner with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and Luxottica in order to research and develop an eyewear that is smart and fashionable. The partnership’s ultimate goal is to create a product that will be both intelligent and functional—a product that consumers would look good in but retains the same characteristics of a Google Glass.
